How to Convert THCa to THC
18th Jan 2023
THCa flower is a relatively new term in the world of cannabis, at least as far as its mainstream attention is concerned. THCa itself, however, is nothing new. Cannabis produces hundreds of different cannabinoids and one of the most abundant cannabinoids is THCa. As the precursor to THC, THCa has been around for as long as cannabis has been around. Most people associate THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) with the “high”-inducing cannabinoid, which it is. That said, THC wouldn’t exist without THCa.
THCa (Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is actually the precursor to THC. When THCa undergoes decarboxylation, through heat and combustion, a portion of it transforms into THC, making it available for all those who want to reap its benefits. Curious as to how it all works, and how to convert THCa to THC so you can make the most of it? Read on!
Conversion Heating Methods to Turn THCa to THC
The main form of THCa comes in cannabis flower or concentrate extracts. Depending on the legality of the state you live in, it’s either referred to as marijuana or THCa flower/concentrates. As many know, it is as simple as rolling up and smoking. The more convenient ways involve the use of glass pipes. In order to convert THCa to THC, heat is a necessary component:
- With a lighter flame
- In an oven for edibles
- With a vaporizer
- With a dab rig and torch for concentrates
Decarboxylation for Converting THCa to THC
The process of decarboxylation requires exposure to heat. When vaporizing and smoking, high temperatures quickly decarboxylate THCa’s compounds, which enables your body to immediately absorb them.
Oxygen can contribute to the decarboxylation process as well. This is important as it relates to storing your products. Always keep your flower in an airtight container to prevent premature decarboxylation and maintain the flower’s potency and freshness.
The Temperature and Time Components
The two most important components for using decarboxylation to convert THCa to THC are temperature and time. If you’re doing this to get the THC so you can use it for edibles, you’ll need a temperature between 200 and 245°F. Put your THCa buds on a cookie tray in the oven and heat them for approximately 30 to 40 minutes at 220°F to make edibles.
If you’re looking to use the THCA buds for vaping or smoking, you’ll need to heat them for a longer period of time and at a lower temperature. This keeps the terpenes and cannabinoids intact. The following are some heat/time recommendations…
CBDA/CBD:
- At 130°C, or 265°F for 20 minutes
- At 110°C, or 230°F for 45 minutes
THCA/THC:
- At 130°C, or 260°F for 9 minutes
- At 110°C, or 230°F for 30 minutes
The Oven Method
If you’re using the DIY oven method to decarboxylate THCa flower, the most important thing is to keep an eye on your cannabis. Oven temperatures should remain consistent, but there’s always a chance that they could fluctuate. Turn down the oven if it smells like something is burning and consider purchasing an accurate oven thermometer.
For guidance on how to make edibles (cookies, brownies, etc.) while converting THCa to THC in the oven, check out our tips:
- Bring your oven up to temperature (220°F)
- Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper
- Either grind or break up the cannabis into the baking mixture
- Stir the cannabis in the mixture thoroughly
- Put the cookies or brownies in the oven and heat for 30 to 40 minutes
- Let the treats cool for 30 minutes at room temperature. The cookies should be golden brown on the top and the brownies (if you’re making them) should have firm edges
- Enjoy!
Note: Please keep in mind that when converting THCa to THC, you may end up with a product that is not considered legal in all states. Always check with the laws and regulations in your state before purchasing or using products of this sort.
