What Is THCa Flower and Is it Legal?

23rd Feb 2023

If there is one thing that is constant, it is change. New products are always on the market, which means that as consumers, it’s on us to stay up-to-date and educated. Not so long ago, CBD was a pretty big deal and received a lot of hype in the mainstream media. Smokable hemp came along several years later. Now, it seems, THCa flower is generating a lot of interest and conversations amongst both casual and seasoned cannabis users. But what is THCa flower anyway? Does it have any particular benefits? Is it even legal?

What’s THCa Flower?

Cannabis buds are also referred to as THCa flowers, and are marketed as hemp. For vaping or smoking, the buds contain low concentrations of D9 and high THCa concentrations (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid). When measured by their dry weight, however, THCa flower’s levels do not exceed 0.3% of D9 THC. That means that on its own, THCa flower does not yield intoxicating, psychotropic effects. Notice that we said on its own… once it undergoes the process of decarboxylation, however, things change.

The Legality of the THCa Flower

The 2018 Farm Bill was instrumental in the USDA’s regulation of marijuana vs. hemp. As per the bill, all Delta 9 THC products must contain less than 0.3% of THC in their original state in order to be sold legally. Because THCa flower does not exceed this, certain states such as North Carolina are permitted to sell THCa legally. Users still get the same effects that they would from smoking THC when they smoke THCa, but because of its cultivation methods, THCa flower can be grown and sold legally without repercussions. The way the hemp is harvested does not exceed the 0.3% THC content, meaning it is not controlled under federal law.

It is always advised to double check your state and local regulations prior to purchasing and using THCa flower. That said, if you live in an area that abides by the 2018 Farm Bill’s rules and regulations, there may be a world of possibilities available to you with THCa flower.

Possible THCa Flower Benefits

The benefits listed below are by no means carved in stone. Research is still being done to further support these claims. Anecdotal evidence suggests that using THCa flower may help in the following ways:

  • THCa flower may offer potential neuroprotective qualities.
  • THCa flower could provide a reprieve from many types of pain.
  • It may be a useful aid for gastrointestinal issues.
  • Some people saw help with insomnia and anxiety by using THCa flower.

Important: If you intend to purchase and use anything associated with THCa, please research the current laws applying to your state where it is concerned.
